Written largely in 1909 in parallel with Cahier 6, Cahier 7 is part of the early project of a "Contre Sainte-Beuve" that is both narrative and critical. In addition to descriptions of the church in Combray and the abbey in Guermantes, it contains the first drafts of episodes that will become central to À la recherche du temps perdu - the presentation of the "small nucleus of the Verdurins," the meeting of the hero with Guercy (the future Charlus), the evening at the Princess of Guermantes' house, and the great piece on the "accursed race" - but also a conversation between the hero and his mother about Guermantes, and then about "Sainte-Beuve and Baudelaire."

The present edition was prepared by Julie André, Emanuele Arioli and Matthieu Vernet. The first volume offers the complete facsimile of Cahier 7 and its material description. The second volume includes the complete diplomatic (i.e., topographical) transcription of the notebook, an extensive introduction and annotation that places it in its genetic and cultural context, as well as a content analysis, a diagram (or map) of the textual units, and several indexes.

Established in 1962 and completed in 1985, the Marcel Proust collection is one of the jewels of the Manuscript Department of the Bibliothèque nationale de France, and one of the richest and most complete collections of literary manuscripts ever assembled.
